Best Answer

It was actually his idea. Capone turned himself in to Chicago police on a concealed-weapons charge, as an ultimate way to avoid a "hit" by rival gangsters. He expected to be released after things settled down, but the Federal government seized the opportunity (since Capone was already in custody, and could be extradited) to launch an income tax evasion case against him. He was convicted in 1922, and sent to prison.

Tax evasion. In 1931, Al Capone was convicted on federal charges of tax evasion and sentenced to federal prison. His incarceration included a term at Alcatraz.

Did Eliot Ness ever actually meet Al Capone?

Yes, he did. once when they escorted Al Capone to the train taking Capone to Jail. Ness was responsible for raids on breweries. Capone was convicted for tax evasion - a different team than what Ness was part of.

Why was it so hard to put Al Capone in jail?

no one had any solid proof that Al Capone did murder all those people, or smuggled all those booz. For people who did see, Al Capone's men would bribe them, even officers! Later when Police finally caught him, they couldn't really put him in prison for what they suspected him of. After a lot of thought they put him in jail for taxation, (I think it's spelt like that...) it means that Al Capone, the greatest of all gang leader got caught by not paying his taxes!
