In the era preceding the outbreak of World War II, the failure of "appeasement" was demonstrated in the war's outbreak in itself. That is, the primary (but not only) purpose of appeasement was to avoid a general war such as had taken place during World War I. That World War II broke out despite the Western attempts to appease Germany is, then, the clearest failure of the policy.

appeasement is the act of giving into Hitlers demands when they seemed reasonable. The policy of appeasement was used from 1935 to 1938 and is closely linked to the British Prime Minister at the time, Neville Chamberlain, who was Prime Minister from 1937 to 1940. It failed because:

1. it gave Hitler the advantage, causing him to grow stronger and stronger

2. It was not right because Britain and France allowed Hitler to break rules from previous treaties (such as the Treaty of Versailles- broken when Hitler remiliterised the Rhineland)

3. Chamberlain misjudged Hitler and thought that he was like any other leader- that Hitler would listen to reason. He didnt realise until it was too late that Hitler just felt more confident through getting what he wanted.

4. The appeasers (Britain and France) missed oppurtunities to stop Hitler (such as the remiliterization of the Rhineland)

5. the biggest argument of why appeasement failed is because it did not stop the outbreak of World War 2.
