Answer 1

The story goes that the night before a battle he had a dream telling him that if he carried the symbol of a cross he would win the battle. He woke and had the army put the sign of the cross on everything. He won and declared himself Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Thus, he became a Christian.

Answer 2

If by 'convert' you mean being baptized into the religion, then he only did this on his death bed. Perhaps he was covering all his bases as he was a sun worshipper - Sol Invictus - in his life and a 'Christian' is not to worship pagan or false gods.

Answer 3

Did he? All we have is the word of Eusebius, a person who would do anything to promote his brand of Christianity and the word of Constantine's fanatical mother. There are deep questions involved with Constantine's convenient death bed conversion.

Tradition records that Emperor Constantine saw the sign of "chi rho" in the clouds before a battle. He won the battle. After that, he believed that it was a sign that he should become a Christian and the new faith should be allowed to emerge from the shadows.
