Why was it important for pictures to be painted realistically before photography was invented?

The artist were trying to capture life with paint so they made it as real as they could get it. Funny thing that when photography was invented they copied the style of the painters. If you look at early photos the people are posed and not smiling. They even had frames that were used to pose people on. They held the head still and made sure people didn't move. It wasn't until impressionist work was developed that art began to change. Even then, at first, the reviews of impressionistic paintings was bad and not considered art.

How has photography inspired impressionism?

The first way photography inspired painted art was to reproduce the world in an easy way that took much of the reason for painted realism away from artists who painted. Before photography the gold standard of painting was to replicate the world or a portrait as well as possible. Afterwards, artists needed to present the world in ways the camera could not so the modern art movement was borned. Impressionism being one of these art forms.
