Various ethnic groups resented domination by others and longed for their nations to become independent. Many nations also looked to larger nations for protection. An example of this is that many nations feared that Germany was growing to much power and may take over Europe. Another example of this is Russia; Russia regarded itself as the protector of Europe's Slavic peoples, no matter which government they lived under.
European nationalism had long since been developing in Europe. Imperialism of the times led to Europeans really getting in on the idea that "they" were better then "them". Plus, age-old rivalries helped as well...rising German nationalism (in essence, Germany had never been an actual state, and had always been the battleground and plaything of the French, Swedish, Russian, British, Austrians, etc. Germans didn't want this to happen again, thus formed a strong militaristic state with the ability to defeat any one nation easily in the event of a war. However, ironically, that very German mindset led to the formation of the system of alliances that eventually brought WW1/WW2.)
Nationalism was a significant cause of World War I. In the years prior to war, many Europeans nurtured a firm belief in the cultural, economic and military supremacy of their nation. This arrogance and overconfidence was fuelled by the jingoistic press. - See more at: http://alphahistory.com/worldwar1/nationalism/#sthash.m7HzIRpg.dpuf
Nationalism alone did not start WWl. Other factors that caused WWl were militarism, alliances, imperialism and of course nationalism. Nationalism was a major role because it threatened the stability between nations such as Austria-Hungary. Nationalism was also the cause for why people did not like other people in other countries. There was also economic rivalry and military rivalry which was apart of nationalism.
Nationalism is the major cause for World War 1. Killing Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand Austria by the Serb terrorists triggered war, starting with a declaration of war on Serbia.
Because all the europeans started to distrust each other and build loads of weapons. Even though they all saw the waste of life it would be, it was far too expensive not to have a war.
