Same-sex marriage was banned in California on November 5, 2008. It was banned because a majority of the electorate voted to amend the state constitution to eliminate the existing right of same-sex couples to marry. The reasons why these individuals voted that way are probably cultural, political and religious. If the referendum were held again today, the outcome would likely be different, since public opinion has changed drastically on this issue.

Does California's Proposition 8 exist in other countries?

Other countries have amended their constitutions to ban same-sex marriage. However, no other country has first legalized same-sex marriage, then banned it. Furthermore, no other country has first legalized same-sex marriage, then banned it, then repealed the ban. Maine legalized same-sex marriage and then repealed that law before the law went into effect. That is the most similar case.
