The American Kennel Club
(or AKC
) is a registry of purebred dog pedigrees in the United States. Beyond maintaining its pedigree registry, this kennel club also promotes events for purebred dogs, including the Westminster Kennel Club
Dog Show, an annual event which predates the official forming of the AKC, and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. The AKC is not part of the International Canine Organisation, Fédération Cynologique Internationale, as most other countries' kennel clubs are.
The American Kennel Club's mission statement says:
The American Kennel Club is dedicated to upholding the integrity of its Registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function. Founded in 1884, the AKC and its affiliated organizations advocate for the purebred dog as a family companion, advance canine health and well-being, work to protect the rights of all dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership.
