The Colosseum was an important monument in Rome because it was where many of the games took place, such as, gladiatorial competitions, the hunts, mock naval battles, and many more. The Colosseum was also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre because it was constructed during the Flavian Dynasty. The emperor and first ruler under the Flavian Dynasty, Vespasian, was responsible for starting the construction in A.D 70 and in A.D. 80 the construction was completed under his son, the emperor Titus. It is said that once the Colossuem was completed games were held for one hundred consecutive days, in which time thousands of wild animals were killed. The Colosseum was able to accommodate up to 70,000 people and could be evacuated completely in less than 20 minutes if need be. Under the floor of the Colosseum gladiators were held before they fought and animals were kept. The Colosseum was equipped with a lever system and trap doors so that the wild animals could be lifted up to the main floor for the hunts and games.

∙ 11y agoThe Colosseum, as large as it was/is was basically nothing more than an entertainment center. It's importance was generated by the events held there, its size and its beauty. It was also a monument to the Flavian dynasty with all three Flavian emperors doing some type of work on it. Roman engineering and innovation were given an opportunity to showcase itself in the underground storage, pipes for flooding and draining, elevators, animal cages, stage scenery storage, etc.

A. The Colosseum was used as an arena to kill Christians and other groups of people that Rome believed should die in this arena;
B. The Colosseum was a place where Romans could be entertained by battles that were able to pit wild animals against gladiators or against captured enemies of Rome;
C. The Colosseum added more entertainment to the Roman people by having the capacity to be flooded and enact mock naval battles;
D. The Colosseum & the events that took place there was a method to keep Roman citizens entertained and thus become an outlet for citizen boredom; and
E. The Colosseum was an edifice of the power of Rome.

It was a multi-purpose structure, holding gladiatorial combats, public executions, various games and festivals and could even be flooded an turned into a lake for mock sea battles.
