President Lincoln was asked to attend the dedication ceremony of the Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and 'perhaps say a few words'. As to any ulterior motives, one may only speculate.
it was written in order to honor the soldiers that died in the battle of Gettysburg

∙ 12y agoIt was given in dedication to the cemetery at Gettysburg. Lincoln was at the end of the dedication and the speech only took about 10 minutes. Critics made fun of the speech, but it has stood the test of time and is one of the greatest speeches given by a president.
