The Harlem Renaissance was the awakening of black people, so to speak. It was when African Americans began making contributions to literature, music, poetry, etc. Many consider the Harlem Renaissance the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement.

So to answer the question, first of all, the Harlem Renaissance preceded negritude. The negritude writers Cesaire, Senghor and Damas were inspired by the black American art movement. The Harlem Renaissance was set into motion by the concept of The New Negro. It must also be noted that there were several important women, the Nardal sisters, who actually introduced the black American art to Cesaire and the others.
