It wasn't an embarrassment to Jefferson. He bought it because it gave access to controlling the Mississippi River. He problem was that the constitution gave no framework in buying and adding territory and new land. The constitution lists the powers of the federal government, but adding land wasn't included so it was a new area for Jefferson to figure out the laws that would allow it to take place.
