Why was the Nintendo GameCube a prototype for the Wii Nintendo as far back as 2001?

The Nintendo GameCube came out in 2001, and was succeeded by the Wii. The Wii is backwards compatible, and will play Gamecube games, and also uses the optical discs that the Wii uses, only they are smaller.
