Thomas Edison's 1877 invention, the phonograph, was created in order to play back the first voice recordings, made for the purpose of studying and analyzing sound. Initially the purpose of his invention was to record and play back the speaking voice, such as for taking dictation in an office.

∙ 14y agoThey were popular because they did the job and because that's all they had. Recording sound was as big a thrill in the late 1800s as Photography was at the beginning of the 1800s. Until recording tape and digital technology came along it was fine. Early recordings had a maximum length of about 4 minutes. Great for a song but for a longer performance, a live concert or a symphony? Forget it. Once magnetic recording tape came along in the 1940s, the picture changed. If you could record an entire Opera, why did your home system still mean 78 RPM records with that 4-minute time limit? A Beethoven symphony might mean 10 different records, getting up and changing sides and, oh, records got scratches and broke. By the mid 1950s 33 1/3 Long Play records meant you could fit a Beethoven symphony on a single disc. The recording and playback process was pretty good by the time The Beatles recorded their Sgt. Pepper album. But records still scratched and the whole "flat black disc on a turntable" business was technology from 1888. In the 1970s digital recording came along. Goodbye, magnetic recording tape! In 1981, Richard Strauss' "Alpensinfonie," with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan, was the first digitally recorded and manufactured CD. One work, almost an hour long, and you could hear it from beginning to end without interruption. They can be scratched and the spinning disc format is sort of archaic. Flash drives and memory cards will probably replace CDs. Then, someone will ask, "Why were CDs popular?"
