Between 1922 and 1940 the YMCA rooms grew from 55,000 rooms to more than 100,000 this more than any hotel at the time. In 1861 5,000 members served as surgeons, nurses and Chaplin's during the civil war. The volunteers distributed medical supplies, food, and clothing. They also taught soldiers to read and write. The first YMCA open with gyms in 1869 and in 1881 the Boston YMCA staffer Robert J. Roberts made the term "body building" and developed exercise classes.
