The anti-slavery language was removed from the Declaration because of intensive opposition from the southern and central states. Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia had the most to lose. Delaware and Maryland also had slaves. Slave trading was also very profitable for northerners, particularly Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Before any discussion, on the issue of American Independence, The Second Continental Congress voted that any document declaring independence would have to be approved by a unanimous vote of all the representatives of the American Colonies. Just one "no" vote from just one delegate of any colony, the Declaration of Independence, and the freedom of the United States would never have happened.

After Thomas Jefferson, finished writing the document he presented it to the Congress. Many things had to be changed, or totally removed. Thomas Jefferson had a passage in the document that prohibited slavery. The Southern Colonies that were represented were a little bit more than just upset. They were furious!

They reminded Jefferson, that he was also a Southerner, and owned slaves. Then, the delegates from the South gave Jefferson 2 choices: First, he would remove the entire passage on slavery from his document, or second, the South would vote against independence from England, and the dreams of freedom would die and be buried forevermore.

Jefferson had no choice. He removed the statement about the prohibition of slavery. The Second Continental Congress passed and adopted the Declaration of Independence, by a unanimous vote on July 4, 1776.

The answer below is wrong. Slavery wasn't an issue in 1776 and the Declaration was an open letter to the king on the problems the colonies had with the crown. The issue of slavery and the southern plantations became an issue much later.
