The Battle of Fort Henry was important because it was the first blow inflicted to the Confederate's defensive system set up to block a Union invasion of Tennessee coming down the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers.

The seize of Fort Henry opened the way to the Union forces led by Gen. Grant to invest the stronghold of Fort Donelson on the River Cumberland.

The bombardment of Fort McHenry inspired Francis Scott Key to write the national anthem of the United States of America. Key wrote the lyrics as he was imprisoned on an enemy ship a few miles offshore from the fort. The "rocket's red glare" refers to the bombs exploding around the fort, and the flag "so valiantly streaming" was the one declaring that Fort McHenry still belonged to the United States.

The Battle of Fort Henry was important because Grant's victory there, gave to the Union the control over the Tennessee River and opened the gate to the investment of Fort Donelson whose seize would have given to the Union the control over The River Cumberland and the northwest Tennessee and caused

the collapse of the whole Confederate's defensive system in that area.
