The area now known as Austin, Texas has been inhabited by humans since 9200 BCE. Originally known as a territory called Waterloo, Austin was named after Stephen F. Austin and designated the capital of the newly-formed Republic of Texas in 1839. The name Austin has not been used for another Texas city, and the location of the only Austin, Texas has not been moved.
