It makes it easier to pull the seeds out of cotton. Before the cotton gin, it took about a day to produce one pound of cotton without the seeds. With the cotton gin, people could produce many pounds of cotton and all they needed to do was pick the cotton and put it in the cotton gin to clean it.

The cotton gin automated the seed separation process. This machine could generate up to fifty pounds of cleaned cotton daily, making cotton production profitable for the southern states. Before the invention of the cotton gin farming cotton required hundreds of man-hours to separate the cottonseed from the raw cotton fibers.

The cotton gin removed seeds from the cotton bolls. Before this, it had to be done by hand and took a lot of time. Now it can be done faster and more cotton could be planted and grown. This increased the need for slaves to work more fields. Factories in the North were built to process the cotton into cloth. The factories made more money, cotton could be grown in more areas and the land owner made more money.

Cotton went from having the seeds hand picked from the bolls to having them fall into the bottom of the box as the gin teeth pulled apart the bolls. Raw cotton is very dense and it took a lot of time to remove the seeds. Once this is done the cotton can be processed. Even today cotton is taken in big trailers to the cotton gin for removing the seeds, processing, and made into bales. The invention of the cotton gin allowed the growers of the 1800's to grow more cotton which required the need for more slaves. There is a relationship between the number of bales of cotton to the growth of the slave population. Eli Whitney had his invention stolen from him and after years in court he only earned 900.00 from it.
