The Free Soil Party was founded to help prevent the spread of slavery and slave owners into the western territories. Some members even wanted to ban free blacks from the territories. The Party believed in many of Jefferson's ideals, such as the small, family farm being the backbone of the nation. Their slogan was, "Free Soil! Free Speech! Free Men!"

In the 1860 election the Republican Party nominated Abraham Lincoln with a platform that promised not to interfere with slavery in the states, but opposed the further extension of slavery into the territories.
