Some camps, such as Auschwitz, even had fair-sized orchestras! The main reasons were the German (and traditional Jewish) love of music ... and the fact that some of the commandants wanted to be entertained.

In due course a good camp orchestra (or at least a brass band) became a matter of pride for camp commandants. The members of the camp orchestra were adequately fed and had much better accommodation that other inmates. They had to play in the mornings when column after column of prisoners marched off to work and again in the evening when they returned. They also had to play during executions(!) ...

One of the best known camp orchestras was the Auschwitz Women's (often all Girls') Orchestra. It was originally set up by Maria Mandel, who was in effect the commandant of the women's camp. Though she was usually intensely sadistic she encouraged the Women's Orchestra and turned a blind eye to some breaches of camp discipline on the part of its members.

Fania Fénélon, a Parisian Jew, has written about her experiences as a member of the Auschwitz Women's Orchestra. The title of the English translation is Playing for Time.

Why did Jews play music at concentration camps?

By no means did all of them survive - many, many Jewish musicians died in the concentration camps. But if you were a good musician, it bought you time. The Gestapo liked to have a band playing when marching prisoners - especially children - to the gas chambers, believing it helped to calm them. The inmates who could play well - Jewish or not - were kept around longer, because they were useful. This, in the long run, increased their chances for survival, though it by no means guaranteed it.
