Thomas More was the chancellor to King Henry VIII and refused to declare him as the head of the Church in England when Henry split from the Catholic Church. For that he was imprisoned. When he further refused to take an oath of allegiance to the king he was tried for treason and executed.
Sir Thomas More was beheaded by Henry VIII in 1535 because he refused to sign the Act of Supremecy, recognising the King as head of the Church of England. More's own loyalty to Catholicism and therefore the Pope cost him his life.
In a literal sense, no but there was 'strong' suggestions that it was justified. He failed to swear the oath (Act) of succession which Thomas More himself knew would be punishable by death. However, the current treason act during the time of his trail and execution (1535) stated that treason was to act maliciously towards the head of state, it wasn't until the following year where treason could be spoken. But Thomas More did not do this; he simply failed to swear the oath and didn't give any reasons. There exists the theory that he did speak maliciously though, by a report from Sir Richard Rich whom apperantly overheard him say so in the tower.
