Germany under Adolf Hitler believed that they had been treated unfairly under the Treaty of Versailles. So in order to obtain what was rightfully Germany's, Adolf Hitler sent troops to almost every nation in Europe (except for Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain (could never get troops their), Ireland, and Iceland).
The Axis wanted to take over the world, and the Allies wanted to stop them.
Basically, Hitler wanted to kill all the jews.

The Spanish American War ended right before this decade began and World War One began in Europe in 1914. (We did not join World War One until 1918.)
