short answer: Cause he's your ex. more? He is likely still hurt and/or angry at you and lashing out so you will hurt too. He's maybe still emotional about the crap that made you break up in the first place. He may be pushing you away because it hurts too much to be around you or he's ready to move on and is trying to tell you to leave him alone. Maybe he just wants some time to think things over without you around. my advice is spend less time wondering why everything is no longer peachy and more time getting on with your life without him. Move on. Tell him if you want him back or if you wanna be friends then leave him alone and see what happens. But don't wait around pining, you're probably wasting your time.
Once you and a Guy break up, there's hardly ever going to be a friendship after that. Asking to be friends after that is like saying- the dog died but we can still keep it. Guys date girls to be cool once its over they treat you like crap cause they have nothing else to deal with you with. My advice is to try to get over him!
They probably feel rejected, they could in fact be upset that you two broke up. You need to give them some time to recover, don't be calling them and seeing them as this will not help them move on, unless of course you two have children together, then you need to not interfere in their life too much, I'm sure in time they will come around and you two can be friends.
There are several reasons why your ex is being mean to you.
1) He could be regretting breaking up with you and could be trying to cover up his mistake of breaking up with you by being mean.
2) He could be trying to forget about you and him - if something bad happened between the two of you - so is doing this by being mean to you.
There are other reasons but these two are the main ones.
Because He/She Still Loves You.

Designation
Legal Separation and Divorce are two different entities. The amount of time that you are legally separated from your spouse does not necessarily affect the divorce proceeding in the sense that you are not divorced after a certain amount of time being separated but it can help with the separation of assets. By this I mean that during the time you are legally separated that is when the economic community ends.
