Why was Terrence Howard replaced with Don Cheadle in the Iron Man movies?

Terrence Howard says there was no explanation given, but Entertainment Weekly reports that the director Jon Favreau did not enjoy working with Howard.
There was also a financial factor: Howard was the first cast member to sign on for the first film and was the highest-paid. Marvel wanted to lower his salary for the second film, but at some point the negotiations ended.

∙ 10y agoBecause he was paid more than both Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow for being cast before either one of them in the first film- so he was dropped from the second film after the producers were talking about giving him a smaller role to cut down on his salary.
Jon Favreau was not really impressed with his performance as James Rhodes in the first film- so Don Cheadle was chosen to take over the role for him in the sequels.

∙ 13y agoIf you're referring to Rhodey, played by Terrance Howard in Iron Man, he did not chose to come back for the sequel due to money issues. He turned down the offer because of "financial disagreement" which basically means they were're paying him enough. He was replaced by Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2.
