Because the far east had many valuable goods, but all the land routes had many hostiles that wpuld rob and loot their cargo.

At the time, railways did not yet exist, and traveling such great distances across open country by foot was not only slow, but dangerous.

Ships could travel much faster, and more safely (avoiding loss of cargo), and thus were vastly more profitable.

Mainly for the purposes of trade - transporting goods overland requires endless numbers of camels, horses and so forth. Whereas transporting good by sea requires a fleet of ships with decent harbors to load and unload in. Europe already had hundreds of these, not least London with its forty miles of docks.
