For some people the idea of the means of production being owned & operated the central government by for the sole benefit of the people & its workers was appealing. The large industrialists large landowners & their unfair profits would be eliminated.
All money in excess from Government operated factories & farms could be used to raise wages, improve social benefits or be plowed back into improving industries.
Private property being abolished would place everyone at the same level in that category.
The idea that at some point in time, "government" would be unnecessary and withered away appealed to some intellectuals.
Democratic socialists were not happy however, as Marx called for a violent overthrow of governments in order to install the Dictatorship of the Proletariat. This meant bloodshed and perhaps civil war. They were also unhappy at the prospect of an authoritarian dictatorship and the end of voting.

∙ 14y agoMarxism promised the Russian people freedom from opression, slavery, poverty & all the ills of the world by an equitable distribution of produce amongst those who produced it. Marxism would appeal to anybody who believed in equality but mankind (including Russians) eventually returns to a pyramid system with the majority (poor) at the bottom and the obscenely wealthy minority at the top.

∙ 10y agoThe ideas of Karl Marx were for the most part unknown to the majority of people in Russia towards the end of WW1. The overthrow of the Czarist regime was popular as the economic conditions in Czarist Russia were terrible. Promises made by various socialist parties were popular because they promised better working and living conditions then what they had.

∙ 9y agoRussians liked Marxist ideas because they felt that there was great inequality in the country. The elite had much more power than the workers. The USSR ended up with the same problem, anyway.
