Because of the preaching work that they were doing in obedience to Jesus

(Matthew 28:19+20)

(Acts 4:1-3) Now while the [two] were speaking to the people, the chief priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, being annoyed becausethey were teaching the people and were plainly declaring the resurrection from the dead in the case of Jesus; and they laid their hands upon them and put them in custody till the next day, for it was already evening. (Acts 4:8-12 NWT)

(Acts 4:18-21) . . .With that they called them and charged them, nowhere to make any utterance or to teach upon the basis of the name of Jesus. But in reply Peter and John said to them: "Whether it is righteous in the sight of God to listen to YOU rather than to God, judge for yourselves. But as for us, we cannot stop speaking about the things we have seen and heard."

(Acts 5:27-32 NASB) ." . .When they had brought them, they stood them before the Council. The high priest questioned them, saying, "We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man's blood upon us."But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. ..."...."So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ..(Acts 5:41-42 NASB)

If you are referring to the disciples of Jesus, first you'll have to prove that Jewish leaders persecuted them. Jewish tradition holds that the main reaction consisted of ignoring them. If persecution took place, it would have been because the fledgling group was viewed as heretical.

Peter and John went to the temple to pray and there a lame man was begging for alms. Peter healed him and all the people around them saw it happen. Then the Sadducee's came to them and arrested them and put them in jail ( Acts 3 & 4).
