The Beatles were a phenomenon for the 60's. They were very different than their peers because they were not dancing suggestively (Elvis), nor were they encouraging rebel behavior (Buddy Holly).

For parents of the generation that made the Beatles huge, these young men were clean cut, nicely dressed, and they didn't pose a threat with their music. The music (our parents thought) was simple, sweet, and innocuous enough for young girls.

What our parents didn't know was that the lyrics WERE suggestive to our young minds. Those "clean cut" boys were awfully cute, they were MEN, and they sang about girls our age. We went nuts. There were four of them, they sounded great, our parents liked the music and they bought our tickets for the concerts. You could pick the one you wanted to have a crush on and no one was angry.

For the young girl of the 60's, an idol crush was safe. Her mom had crushed on Frank Sinatra and she was none the worse for it, so we had Mom on our side. Daddy would fork over the money for princess to be happy, so we decorated our rooms with memorabilia, fan magazines, cut our hair to imitate the Beatle Bob, and bought the whole Carnaby Beat.

The Beatles were the vanguard of the British Invasion. We loved the idea of a "culture" that we could understand but that had a "foreign" accent. For the average mid-teen, London was a dream, a fantasy of romance and daydreams. A British accent was just different enough that an American girl could still understand, but at the same time could be swept away on a fantasy of mystery. We bought the whole package: clothes, perfume, accent, boots, accent, mini skirts (hoo boy, did Daddy get upset), accent.

So the Beatles took the American female teen-buying public by storm. Their early popularity among young teens gave the band the impetus to branch out with intricate rhythms and embroideries on their music that gave serious musicians great pleasure. Their later works were thoughtful, elegant, and very well crafted.

From early success with simple pop ballads that took the Americas by storm to their later works that impressed serious musicians, the Beatles were a phenomenon that was very different by the standards of the day. Their work changed the face of popular music then and laid the groundwork for pop music to become a serious genre. Much of their work has echos today, over 40 years later in today's pop, neoclassical, and even hip-hop music.

Their legacy has been massive. Much of the 80's music was a direct result of the Beatles' work. The intricate melodies, the orchestration, and especially the crafting of lyrics all had their beginnings with the Beatles. The music that the Beatles made under the workmanship of Paul McCartney and John Lennon is now classic. It is worthwhile studying.

They were what you call an original rock group that spurred the motion of millions of other bands to use a drummer and all Guitars in a band. If you think about it that is nearly every single band today.

The beatles, although big in Europe before they came to the U.S, didnt become A world wide phenomenon UNTIL they made it big in the U.S. There are many reasons why the Beatles were a hit, their music has mass appeal, it was happy music, their image appealled to woman and to many young men who felt long hair, the "mop top" look, was a good way to rebel. Many historians believe that the main reason the Beatles hit big was because of their timing. They came to the U.S and the world at the right time. The U.S especailly needed the Beatles at that precise time in history, JFK being shot, Elvis was nowhere to be found, civil and political un rest, etc.,. To me, the answer was timing.

The reason the Beatles were popular was that they were great performers and sang and wrote great music. People could relate to their music, liked it, and girls thought they were cute at the time. There were also people who helped them, including Brian Epstein, their manager, and George Martin, their producer, and manager of EMI Studios.

The Beatles success is tied up with with their timing, talent, attitude and placement:

The timing started with being born during WW2. This meant that when the band broke through, the baby boom generation were teenagers so they had a huge fanbase - ISTR that half the population was below 20. Their first UK, nationwide broadcast was during the 1963 winter - one of the worst in the 20th Century - which meant a record TV audience. They also became a "light" news story which the papers could use to balance against the big, "heavy" stories that were breaking at the time (the Christine Keeler scandal, the Great Train Robbery and the winter weather). The timing in America was again to provide a light contrast to the news of the assassination of Kennedy.

But, as was said at the time, all the hype in world can't sell a bad product, which leads us to talent:

Obviously, Lennon and McCartney were talented musicians and songwriters and the quickness of Lennon's mind was balanced by the disipline that McCartney brought to the band.

The attitude of the band, particularly Lennon and McCartney was to always try something new. McCartney had noted that when bands had a successful single, they tended to follow it with a similar, not quite as good single, then an even worse one. The Beatles avoided this by deliberately trying to do something different for each record. McCartney also pointed out that the different personalities of the band strengthened the whole. For example, Lennon got bored very quickly, so it meant the whole band was always moving on, Harrison was a dedicated musician, raising the standard of the whole band.

The placement started with being brought up in the trans-Atlantic port of Liverpool, they were exposed to a wide range of music and they inherited Irish wit (Lennon & McCartney are Irish names and Harrison's mother was Irish). They were also very fortunate to have George Martin as producer and to record at EMI.

THE REAL REASON THE BEATLES WERE SO FAMOUS IS BECAUSE #1- THEY CAPITALIZED ON THE KENNEDY ASSASSINATION. #2 THEY HAD A BRILLIANT PRODUCER GEORGE MARTIN. #3 THE RECORD LABEL AND THE MEDIA WERE CONSISTENT IN PROMOTING THE HELL OUT OF THEM.

MANY CLAIM TO BELIEVE THAT THE BEATLES WERE THE GREATEST ACT IN SHOWBIZ BUT ANYONE WITH A MIND OF THEIR OWN KNOWS OTHERWISE.

THEY WERE A SHAM, A MEDIOCRE ONE AT THAT. IF YOU WANT REAL QUALITY LISTEN TO The Beach Boys AND PHIL SPECTOR- THE MUSIC SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.

The song writing team of McCartny, Lennon and Harrison!

Its also been observed that the pop world of 1963 was desperate for something new; the fashion of the time was to be unsmiling and moody. The Beatles smiled all the time at the audience and at each other - obviously enjoying the experience.

They also became a "light" news story which the papers could use to balance against the big, "heavy" stories that were breaking at the time (the Christine Keeler scandal, the Great Train Robbery and the winter weather). The Beatles were famous because they revolutionised music and inspired millions. Their sound changed from the smalltown dance cavern music of the 50's to the psycadelic style in the albums Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band to the classic rock that would lead to the music we know and love today. They were famous because they were revolutionary, changing the face of music forever and for the better.
