The four US Presidents on Mount Rushmore were chosen by Gutzon Borglum to commemorate the founding, growth, preservation and development of the U.S. They symbolize the principles of liberty and freedom on which the nation was founded.

Each of the four Presidents made important contributions to the US and that is why they were chosen for the sculpture on Mount Rushmore.

The sculptor of Mount Rushmore, Gutzom Borglum, chose the four presidents who would be depicted on the monument. He chose them to represent the first 150 years of US history.

George Washington was chosen because he was the first President of the United States. He was also chosen because he was a leader in the American Revolution and the man who laid the foundation of American democracy.
