Because, nobody wanted to talk in the car, standing up, or to meet people. And you can use cellphones in cases of emergency's instead of having to either find a pay phone, or try to get to your house phone.

They were introduced so that people could talk on the phone no matter their location. Before people had cells phones, they had to go somewhere where they could find a landline. That can be inconvenient sometimes, as people will fairly often go to areas where there isn't a phone nearby, or at least one that they know of. If your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, for example, it's good to have a cell phone. Unless there's bad reception or your phone dies, you won't have to go for awalk to find the nearest phone.
