The viking longship was the main reason people feared them. It was light, and had a flat bottom, so it could easily be pulled ashore, and was able to navigate with ease through shallow waters. villiages and towns that were very up river and thought themselves safe, would be shocked when a warband came from the river, sacked and pillaged, and then left in an hour or two. They were fast, fierce, brave, and skilled.
