Sandbags were used to build and reinforce protective locations. The flexibility and heaviness of a bag of sand made it easy to stack quickly to create protective barriers. They could stop bullets and shrapnel. They were often stacked against outside walls to provide the additional armor against the enemy fire. The empty bags were easy to carry and could be filled on the spot as one dug trenches and fox holes.

Sandbags were used because they are able to absorb shock and projectiles. Sand dissipates energy so when a bullet hits it the shock is spread out among all the grains and the bullet stops. Soldiers hide behind sandbags to protect themselves.

Sandbags were used to protect the soldiers from enemy rifle fire. However they were less effective in the event of shell fire. Sandbags were also sometimes placed in the bottom of the trench to soak up water. hope that helped! :D
