If I'm not mistaken, the first recorded examples of humans smoking were the Aztecs who mixed coco bean powder with tobacco and smoked it, also pot is from back in biblical days, but its hard to say with tobacco. Most common answer is the Aztecs using it to smoke chocolate

∙ 12y agoAs a naturally growing species of plant, tobacco wasn't so much invented as it was discovered. Fossil evidence of tobacco in some form has been dated back at least 2.5 million years, but history shows us that "modern" tobacco first began growing in the Americas more recently - around 6000 BC. Natives began to find uses for the substance as early as 1 BC, and from there its use and popularity continued to spread.
Many sources suggest native cultures believed tobacco had spiritual or medicinal qualities, which would have helped spread its use even further. That said, it is unclear as to exactly "why" anyone started using it in the first place.
