NEW ANSWER:
The secret that won the war for America was distance. A huge ocean separated them from Great Britain. The British had to ship arms and armies over this wide stretch of water, which was a very expensive undertaking. In the end this distance, as much as anything else, defeated the British.
Distance was an important factor within the colonies, too. American generals could retreat over vast, sparsely settled landscape without yielding anything of importance. British armies marched and conquered and found themselves controlling nothing but the soil beneath their feet, while a hostile wilderness closed in behind them.
Because we kicked their butts in WAR until they gave up and went back home crying.
Colonists were able to support local businesses and communicate easily in New England because they lived close to each other.
Taxes. I might add that the taxes the colonists were paying were quite a bit lower than the total tax burden that American citizens shoulder today. In fact, hundreds of wars have been fought, and millions of men and women have died, fighting against taxes that were a heck of a lot lower than American citizens are paying right now. The US government appears to be willing to completely ignore the lessons of history. They do so at their own risk.
Unity was important before the revolutionary war because unity helped them stay together as one and be able to fight for their independence. Without unity, the colonies would fall apart and independence wouldn't be claimed separately

For 8 long, very difficult years of suffering, the "spirit of 76" is a testament to the colonists' patriotic zeal. Every able-bodied man had to serve, and did so willingly, to attain Independence from Britain.
The British were trying to make the colonists pay taxes to Britain and continue to serve them in ANY capacity. Basically serving the British as if they lived in Britain! The colonists didn't think they should have to live under the rule of Britain without being able to form their own government or setting rules apart from the Mother England. England wanted to keep control of the colonies. Colonists wanted to be separate from England.
Its all in the Declaration of Independence....The colonists were cranky because King George III was being a crotch, so they spelled it all out in the Declaration of Independence. This document starts with an introducition, then states all the reasons why King George was a jerk, and then ends with a conclusion. Pretty much the basic answer as to why the colonies wanted to break away is that they wanted to be able to govern themselves. They wanted the three branches of government that we have today.
Britain and the US were able to freely trade between each other without Spain interfering.
Britain controlled 1/5 of the world and and still is a world super power. Britain's army's far out numbered the colonists, however Britain's forces were spread out across the globe. This left the colonists out numbering the British military and so victory was achieved. As in those days the communications of today were unavailable hence little or no reinforcement's. As Britain owned so much little was done to reacquire its lost land. However in those days it wasn't Britain vs the USA as the colonists were all British them selves and so the war was more of a civil war than anything else!
They wanted to expand westward and gain more land.
After years of owning India, Britain realized in was not feasible to keep India. It was costing money to defend a country that was not able to offer much in the form of resources.
