Aircraft carriers, that had come from the Japanese home islands to within 100 miles of the Hawian islands. The first attack wave struck at 8am on Sunday morning, when the Japanese knew that the US navy was at it's most vulnerable, with most sailors on leave in Honolulu, and the ships would be unable to get out to sea. Torpedo attacks on ships that were stationary at their docks, made it very easy to sink them.

The focus of the attack was on the island of Oahu. Pearl Harbor had a major portion of the US Navy in for leave and inspection so the focus would be the more dangerous ships. Battleship Row was where the most damage was done. Had the aircraft carriers been in harbor it would have been much worse.

Japanese aircraft carriers.

Japan sailed a fleet of aircraft carriers and attack submarines across the Pacific to Hawaii without the US detecting them. Then they launched an attack without warning using the carrier aircraft and small mini-submarines.

The US Battleships were moved there, from California, in 1940. Officially to deter a Japanese attack (to strengthen the region).
