The Gracchi brothers (The Gracchus') angered the Roman senate because they brought light to the injustices of the Roman elite. They broke down established norms to open the door to en-franchise the poor. The Gracchi ran into problems when in the course of setting up laws to give back land to the poor the elite landholdings were put on the line.

the gracchi Brothers angered the senate because of the way they broke trasition in order to expose their land reform. the land reform in itself was a good idea it was they way they went about getting to the top of the political ladder that angered the senate

The patricians hated the Gracchus brothers because both of them were members of the opposite party, the plebians (the common people), and they both tried to take away land that the rich had bought and give it to the poor who had fought for the land.

What his personal motives were, we will never know, but his political motives were for the same reason(s) that all other so-called reformers had, that is personal power. Both Gracchus brothers embraced redistribution of land, thinking that the poor would benefit. They thought of themselves as the leaders of the population and Tiberius even managed to get himself illegally elected to a second term as tribune, flouting the established laws. The senate fought back with disastrous results for both Gracchus brothers.

Because he had introduced a land reform law which clashed with the interests of the landowning patricians and because he allocated an inheritance from the king of Pergamus (in present day Turkey) to fund his reform. The senate was responsible for the treasury and for overseas affairs. This act was seen as an attack on senatorial prerogatives and as unconstitutional. Tiberius was seen as a subversive who stood against the patricians and who was liable to incite the poor. When he tried to drum up popular support for his struggle with the senate, Tiberius also introduced new demands such as abolishing the senators' exclusive right to act as jurors. Assassination was then seen as the solution of the senante's problems and for the restoration of order.

Tiberius Gracchus introduced a law which provided for the distribution of public land to the landless poor. The aristocracy did not like this king reform and resisted both this law and subsequent similar reforms. What angered the aristocracy even more was that to pursue his policy Tiberius Gracchus challenged the authority and the supremacy of the Roman senate, which was dominated by the aristocracy and represented its interests.

Why is Tiberius Gracchus important to the study of the Roman Empire?

Tiberius Gracchus(and his brother Gaius ten year later) led a struggle to address the plight of the poor. The Gracchi brothers were seen by some modern socialist to have been the first socialists in history. Tiberius Graccus tried implement a land reform that would redistribute land form the large landed estates of the patricians to address the economic plight of the poor. Peasants were being pushed off their farms by rich landowners who expanded their estates using slave labour. They migrated to Rome and lived in abject poverty due to a scarcity of work. They often had to rely on hand-outs by the by the rich by becoming their clients. The brothers tried to address this poverty by redistributing land to the displaced peasants. Tiberius was elected plebeian tribune in 133 BC. He pressed for a land reform by using an old law that limited the amount of land that could be owned any individual. He used another law to establish a commission to oversee the redistribution of land which was made up of himself, his brother Gaius and his father-in-law. The senators, even the liberal ones opposed this as were worried that their lands would be confiscated. They got other tribunes to oppose the reforms. Tiberius then appealed to the people. The senators threatened to prosecute Tiberius after the end of his term. Thus Tiberius stood for re-election. The senators obstructed this. Then several of them attacked him with the help of hired thugs. Tiberius and some 300 of his supporters clubbed to death.
