Either because the linkage is broken or the gear inside the transmission is broken. Have a garage check it out and see what they can find.

Push down and pull the shifter to the drivers seat. Otherwise you may have an issue with your tran. Mine will go in Reverse but not stay there for long. They tell me it could be a little bar in there that is bent or i may need to replace the gear. also check your shift rod bushing. It is cheap to replace couple bucks and does amazing things for your shifting.

Well, there are many different makes and models of Volkswagen, and have been over the past 70 years or so, so it entirely depends upon the model you have in mind, and also whether it's had it's engine modified or not. However, assuming that you are thinking just of the standard VW Beetle, this has a 1200cc flat-four air cooled engine, and has a top speed of about 80-85mph.

The one you need is for 1969-1979 VW Beetle, Super Beetle, Convertible and Karmann Ghia, and the cover's orange. The key for the Volkswagen Cabrio from the years 2000 through 2004 are still 'MFG RESTRICTED' and are a 'DEALER RESTRICTED KEY'. Unfortunately you will have to go to the dealer for any additional keys. There is not a separate 'VALET' key.
