Why will a 1998 Kia Sephia not do anything when you try to start it until you bump the gear shift?

The neutral switch could need adjusting Are you a smoker? My wife tends not to empty the ashtray. Pull the ashtray out, and take the head of the shifter off...don't rip it, your OD switch has wires going to it...their should be enough play to get it up and out of the way. remove the screws that hold the plastic boot that runs between both seats. After gaining access guess what I found. Cigarette ash and tons of it, all over the electrical compnents (the neutral safety switch included). vaccuum all that junk out. and gently clean the components. I did this with everything still in place. move the shifter back and forth a few times, while attempting to start the vehicle. If it still won't turn over in park. start the vehicle in neutral. It costs nothing.
