this ossue may be caused by a bad key,or bad eis (electronic ignition system) hese are both issues for the dealer. your general shop will not be able to fix this due to the fact they dont have the proper computer to comunicate with the car and code the key and eis.
Answer 2:
I was a Mercedes mechanic. If the key is coded to the vehicle (it always worked before) and the EIS can "see" it, you would hear a click as soon as you insert the key. Then you can turn it. If the battery is good and the bottom of the key is clean, it should work. If not, have it towed in to your local dealer.
Hi,
Do you have a spare key if yes then try that if you have the same problem then its 100% EIS is damaged and it need replacing. If the second key works fine then its the first key is damaged. If its the EIS it can be repaired cheaper then a dealer and we can do it. We need a little bit more info and history of the car.
Thanks

Thank you very much. I would like to ask a similar question about my 1999 S500 Mercedes....I went to my car yesterday and stuck the key into the ignition and got absolutely nothing at all.. Completely unable to turn the key.. The key does indeed look bad and is actually falling apart.. It hasn't functioned fully (meaning the automatic features) for going on a couple of years now; but as I could still drive the car I didn't let that bother me too much.. However because I was driving with the key (which is almost in two pieces) for quite sometime now; I wanted to check to see if the problem might not be something else.. Is there any other reason that might cause the key to not turn at all?
Turning my ignition on and wont turn off because it is faulty.
i have a Mercedes 1995 e320 and the car wont start i change the starter and it still wont start for the ignition but if i turn the key and then go to the starter it will start i tried putting it in neutral and starting it but still didnt work and there is a loud buzzing noise that's coming from under the hood could it be a relay or ignition i don't know i have a Mercedes 1995 e320 and the car wont start i change the starter and it still wont start for the ignition but if i turn the key and then go to the starter it will start i tried putting it in neutral and starting it but still didnt work and there is a loud buzzing noise that's coming from under the hood could it be a relay or ignition i don't know

I had this on an XC70 recently. (The key would turn to get the dashboard lights on, but that was it). The lock was broken and needed to be replaced. But the AA man did manage to force the key to work and this enabled me to use car for a few days awaiting the lock with the same code as before.
The ignition swithch has failed and is making a continued contact
mercedes are a european rubbish design on their ignitiopn key the make it for money not quality
