King Herod the Great cared about Jesus' birth because Jesus was prophesized as a king. Herod thought Jesus was going overthrow him so he wanted him killed. But, Jesus said "My kingdom is not of this world" (John 18: 36), but to be "King of the Jews" (Matthew 27: 37).

Herod was known as a ruthless and cruel ruler. He was insanely jealous of anyone who might usurp his throne. He demanded to know where Christ (the King of the Jews) should be born (Matt. 2:4). Herod sent his wise men to go and search diligently for the young child and bring him (Herod) word so that he may go and worship him (Matt. 2:8). Being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way (Matt. 2:12). Matthew 2:16 says "Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth (angry), and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men."
