Not sure, mine is a manuel trans, but have you tryed taking it in to have the filter and fluid changed? Hope that it's not the shift controler on the side of the transmission. Go for the easy fix and try the filter and fluid first.
your Jeep has a 44re or a 42re trans witch is computer controled. when it dosent want to shift out of first that means itsa in faill safe mode most likely a bad sensor on the trans and what type of 4wd system do you have selecttrac or quwadratrac
Are you parking your jeep Down hill/up hill? a good parking brake would fix it. If not the above you may want to check the tranny shift linkage/cable.
Make sure it is not just a sensor. Jeeps tend to have problems with sensors.
Have the transmission computer checked for codes. It most likely has set a code and it then locks into limp home mode ( third only ) until the next key cycle.
The only ways to tow a 2wd is remove the drive shaft or put on a trailer.
This vehicle has full-time 4wd. There is no option to make it rear-wheel drive.
Not from the AMC factory... the stock Jeep V8 option was the 304.
Check the linkage between the shifter and the transfer case. If its ok, go in reverse for about half a block and then try to engage it. If that doesn't work, maybe you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
There is no actuator. The connection is made inside the transfer case when you put it in 4wd.
Shift the 4 wheel drive lever into 4 wheel drive.
If the drive wheels aren't spinning, then no.
All that you do if put the shifter in the four wheel drive position.
Put the lever into the 4wd position.
You pull the transfer case level towards you....
No. You can just put it in drive and go.
YES THE TRANNY WILL WORK'.i JUST PUT A FOUR WHEEEL DRIVE TRANNY AND TRANSFER CASE INTO MUY TO WHEEL DRIVE CHEROKEE THE TRANNY I PUT IN WAS OUT OF A 87 AND THE JEEP I PUT IT INTO IS A 96 ALLTHE PLUGS WORKED PERFECT..HOPE IT WORKS OUT FOR YOU...
Yes you can, but little more difficult.
A Jeep with 4 wheel drive cannot be towed with all 4 wheels down. You must raise the front two wheels and put the rear wheels on a dolly, or have the Jeep placed on a roll back.
The only ways to tow a 2wd is remove the drive shaft or put on a trailer.
Only if all tires have the same amount of tread left.
No put the gear shift into neautral
