Why would a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu only start if you hold in the brake - even then it still cranks slow and takes 10 seconds or so to start - what would cause this?

I am almost certain that the brake has nothing to do with it. I surely would check the fuel filter and replace it if you haven't in the past 2 years. If the check engine light is "ON" then have it diagnosed.
