Why would a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire be chugging when idling in the morning and when you stop then start driving again?

Here is advice: * I had the same problem. By the sounds of it your EGR valve is gone. It's what lets the car know how much gas to put through n what not. * Change spark plugs; worked for me at 110000km * I have a 95 Sunfire, and a few years ago it did this. I did all the common fixes, but nothing worked. I had them check the computer for codes but none showed up. My car stalled at a dealer, and they pulled codes. It turned out that my fuel pump was shorting and they replaced that and it has worked great ever since.

This is a fairly major job, but if you feel that you're up to it, I'd suggest that you pick up a Chilton or Haynes manual. I was looking at my Haynes just this morning, trying to find out how often the timing chain needs to be changed. I couldn't find that specific info, but did see that there are very good directions/photos on how to do that job. FriPilot
