No. By burning something you are breaking it down and forming new products (smoke, carbon dioxide, etc), and these are different from the original compound. In contrast, when you melt something, some of it is actually vaporized at the same time, and that is what you are smelling. So when you melt it, you smell the molecules of the original compound, whereas when you burn it, you are smelling the compounds that were formed during the burning process. That said, when burning something, you will probably also smell some of the original compound, because usually when something is burning, some of it is also vaporized and not all of it is burned.

You can smell burning and sourness. If you smell something and it smells horrid then you would put it down. If you didn't smell it and u just looked at it and it look good, you wouldn't be able to determine if this really is something i should be consuming. Any smell from the car vents is unrelated to the AC system unless it is an antiseptic smell. Generally, the smells are environmental from your engine compartment, where the fresh air is taken from. If you smell something burning from the vents, then something is heating up to much under your hood. Check your compressor for a worn clutch, or oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold.
Something is burning. New answer The above answer is obvious as to what coud be burning it could be a number of things. First check the fluids. If any of them are low it could cause a burning smell, top them up to the proper levels. If the burning smell continues then it could be some thing else. Or it could be some fluids spilt on the engine while it was running. It could also be a malfunctioning cercuit, burnt wire, some thing in the engine could be dying out. When in doubt have it checked out asap or the burning smell could burn through your wallet.
