Could be a fault with the air conditioner, or the circuit breaker isn't designed to work with it.

Does it trip in the first few minutes when turned on? When powering up it draws a peak current, if the CB isn't designed to ignore temporary peak currents then it will think a fault is occurring and trip.

You better also check the power cable from the breaker to the outside condensing unit. In my case, the cable was shorting intermittently to ground at the input clamp to the disconnect. Luckily I heard the zapping, then saw the damage, and easily repaired it.

Either the wiring is shorted out somewhere which should be able to be spotted by a burnt wire somewhere or the compressor is grounded.

What can cause a circuit breaker to suddenly start tripping?

If the breaker trips when nothing is turned on it could be a mouse problem. If it only trips when certain lights or appliances are turned on one of them is probably the reason. If it trips when nothing is being turned on or off something is getting hot. You should then have qualified electrician look at it. Hope this is usefull.

What would cause circuit breaker to trip in new box from old box?

A circuit breaker will trip if it is faulty or if the connected circuit has a short circuit or a connected device is trying to draw more current than the breaker rating. If you disconnect the output wire from the breaker and it still trips, it is a faulty breaker. If the breaker is tripping immediately when it is turned on then start disconnecting elements of the circuit to see what might be causing the problem. If everything was working and now isn't, it is likely that the wire from the breaker is nicked where it exits the box and is shorting to the feedthru connector.

Working principle of air circuit breaker?

circuit breaker is a switch that turned off when there is a short circuitAnswerAn air circuit breaker is a high-voltage circuit breaker whose tripping and closing mechanisms are (usually) operated pneumatically, and whose arc is extinguished by a blast of air -hence the alternative name 'air-blast circuit breaker'.

What could be the problem if a breaker trips when the light is turned off?

A short circuit in the wiring or in the switch.

How do you de-energize a circuit?

To de-energize a circuit, the voltage has to be cut off at the source. This is usually done with a disconnect switch which is located just before the circuit's load. Turning off the breaker on a distribution panel will de-energize the circuit it is feeding. To make sure that the voltage can not be turned back on when work is being done on the circuit, the switch or breaker must have a lock off device to prevent the circuit from being turned on, except by the person that locked the circuit off.

What makes a circuit breaker go bad?

A circuit breaker can go bad from being tripped too many times. Many people don't understand that the tripping of a circuit breaker indicates a problem that needs to be corrected. They usually just reset the circuit breaker, leading to a very common second (or third, or fourth) trip. Circuit breakers tripping are for the prevention of fire due to excessive heat in the circuit. They're not supposed to be tripped repeatedly. This can wear the breaker out. Believe it or not, I've also seen circuit breakers fail to re-energize after being turned off. I speculate this was actually caused by the breaker never having been cycled (it was a main breaker), and the time elapsed since it was installed. Electrical equipment doesn't last forever. It's the same as anything else.

Can a Circuit breaker be used as a Switch?

Yes a circuit breaker is a switch but it should not be used as a switch. The continuous turning off and on of a breaker weakens the internal mechanism and reduces the tripping value of the breaker. There is in the marketplace breakers that are designed to be used as switches. These are usually used in large warehouses where the lights are turned on in the morning and shut off at night. Using these specifically designed breakers for switches does not wear out the tripping mechanism or reduce the tripping value. <<>> A circuit breaker can be used as a switch, although in most cases there are less expensive switches you can use.

Why do the headlights of a 1991 ford explorer go off and on when turned on?

The headlight circuit is protected by a self-resetting circuit breaker. Something in the circuit is drawing too much power and the breaker is cycling on and off.

A short circuit in the wiring or in the switch.

Do you have a 15 0r 20 amp circuit?

Go to your distribution panel and shut off the breaker that you think is the circuit in question. If the circuit becomes de-energized then the breaker you just turned off feeds that circuit. Look on the handle of the breaker and the number you see is the amperage of that circuit. <<>> Determination of a 15 or 20 Ampere circuit is normally indicated by a combination of a 20A breaker and a 20A dedicated outlet. A 15A circuit normally has multiple outlets; not typical in a 20A circuit.

Will manually turning off a shunt trip breaker set off the fire alarm?

Manually turning off a shunt trip breaker should not set off the fire alarm. The only way that the breaker could set off the fire alarm when turned to the off position is if there is an auxiliary contact on the breaker connected to the fire alarm circuit. This is not usually done because the breaker should be able to be turned off when doing maintenance on the breakers circuit. If the breaker is a mandatory feed breaker to a piece of fire alarm equipment and shouldn't be left in the off position it might have a trouble circuit connected to the fire alarm panel. A trouble alarm on a fire alarm panel is different from an alarm circuit alarm.

My central air conditioner does not blow cold air and the unit outside and is not running?

The problem is probably outside. Can`t tell you much more than that from here. The condenser unit outside was not running. I checked the circuit breaker box and found the 220 breaker had been switched off. Turned it back on and now it's running and I'm getting cool air.

Will turning off the main breaker turn off all the power to the circuit breaker box?

No. Power to all the circuit breakers will be cut off except for the Main power breaker. The Main power breaker (which supplies power to all other breakers and will say 100, or whatever your max breaker box power is, on it )will have power going to it all the time, unless power is turned off outside the house.
