Many of the colonists who were the first to arrive in what is now called North America came for the sole purpose of religious freedom. They moved because they wished to worship God in whatever way they chose and not be persecuted for it. Many of the European colonists came to escape the heated battle between the Anglican church and the Catholic church in Europe.
Another reason religious freedom is important is because it is an example of why the United States is a free country. The Bill of Rights, a section in the Constitution listing the necessary rights of American citizens, specifically stated that religious freedom be included. The founding fathers recognized the importance of religious freedom and made sure that we would still recognize it today.
