First, reset the computer by disconnecting the negative battery cable for a couple of minutes then reconnect. If the CHECK ENGINE light still comes on, check the gas cap and make sure it is tight. Due to emission rules (OBDII), the computer checks to make sure the gas cap seals the gas tank. You might have to replace the gas cap.

∙ 14y agoIn a pre OBD 2 vehicle the check engine light comes on when there is a emissions failure in the vehicle the failure is usually due to one of many sensors which control your fuel delivery system in that vehicle. There is 2 exceptions though such as a dead cylinder in the engine or a heavy ignition misfire causing the engine to push unburned fuel through the exhaust causing a O2 sensor to read rich all the time and the computer will think there is a problem with the sensor and turn on the check engine light on

∙ 16y agoIt could mean a lot of things. First rule with check engine light is go to Auto Zone or Orielly's to get it checked. They will give you a print out of what the error code is.
