This condition is because the tail lights and dash lights share a common fuse, which makes the dash lights act as an indicator as to whether or not your tail lights are working (although, this doesn't indicate whether the bulbs are good or not).

Your insturment pannel is currently set to auto dim. page78 in owners guide
pretty easy really, make sure your interior lights are not turned on. Your headlights control should also be the interior light controller. Turn it clockwise or counterclockwise to turn your interior lights off. You'll run your battery down if you dont
On a 2002 Ford Explorer : On the headlight switch , select automatic , park lights, or low beam headlights and pull the headlight switch out towards you to turn the fog lights on ( push the switch in again to turn the fog lights off )
check the ignition switch under the console on the steering column
First thing you want to check is the dimmer switch to see if it is turned all the way down.
probably the fuse is blown.
The headlights on a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT is adjusted using screws behind the lights. One is located on the top and side to allow for full control.
Perhaps you turned on the interior lights when you were adjusting the headlights?
when you open the door to your vehicle or unlock it with the key FOB, the lights turn on. usually the interior, headlights, and reverse lights shine.
It sounds like a blown fuse or a bad head light switch
You probably turned them on by accident. They are controlled with the same pull switch that turns on the headlights. By twisting the switch to the far left it will click and the dome lights will turn on, by twisting it to the right it will turn off the interior lights and will then dim the dashboard lights.
