Now, if it is actually a "popping sound", it depends on where it is coming from, if it is constant, whether it is fast, slow, or variable. This could be numerous things. The most common, if it is quick and steady, like a "ptht ptht", then you might want to get your oil checked/changed. Another option is to check your spark plugs. Most often than not, an old vehicle that has not had a tune up will lose the life of a few spark plugs, this will cause your engine to "miss"( leaving a "gas pocket"). Or maybe the distributer cap/rotor is bad, not allowing a spark to the plugs themselves. Check the plugs, wires, cap, rotor.
