Obsidian is another name for "volcanic glass". For a glass to form the molten lava must be cooled very, very quickly. The deep recesses of the Earth are not cold, they are warm and this means that molten lave intruded into the deep recesses of the Earth will not cool quickly and thus Obsidian can never form in these conditions. Obsidian can only form at the surface. However, there is one other way for a glass to be produced in Geology and that is by the heating generated by friction during a fault movement. This type of glass is called a "pseudotachylyte". These ARE generated in the deep recesses of the Earth.
